Supporting Summit County Local Businesses has a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond mere transactions. By supporting local businesses, you’re investing in the heart of your community. Local shops often offer unique products and personalized services that simply can’t be found elsewhere. Moreover, your patronage directly contributes to the local economy, fostering job creation and sustainable growth. Additionally, buying locally reduces environmental impact by minimizing transportation and packaging. Ultimately, supporting local not only enriches your shopping, dining, etc. experience but also strengthens the social fabric and vitality of our County.
It is the mission of the Chamber to foster economic vitality and support community wide growth. The key ingredient to the success of this mission is local businesses. Businesses are the lifeblood of a community and perhaps the ultimate public-private partnership. Local businesses provide jobs and sales tax revenue to support important public infrastructure and capital projects, provide support to our local non-profits, schools, and sports teams, as well as create a sense of place that people from all corners of the world want to visit and live. Without the business community and the commerce that they provide, government would not be able to provide public safety, health care, housing services, or protect and maintain our outstanding recreational opportunities and natural resources. Now more than ever, it is important to support these local stores and keep the fabric of our community alive.

The Summit County Chamber, like most Chambers, has always supported the “Shop Local” campaign that usually occurs around the holidays. Several years ago, the Chamber and SIBA (Summit Independent Business Alliance) merged and became one entity, because the mission of each organization was so similar: support local. But now, we are living in a time when shopping online has become so convenient that it’s just so easy to press “order now” instead of visiting our local shops. It is up to us to make the extra effort to step out and support local businesses. Whether it is a restaurant, a boutique, an activity, or a local brewery, they need our commitment.
In 2022, the Summit Chamber of Commerce stood with our local liquor stores and fought against Proposition 125, allowing grocery stores and convenience stores to sell wine. The proposition passed that November and our liquor stores have been suffering ever since. After a lot of discussion with liquor store owners, it became apparent that the Chamber needed to take action. We realized that “shopping local” needs to happen year-round, not just during the holidays, and that we need to help consumers understand why this is so important. From this, the “Be Local” initiative was created. The “Be Local” campaign is a year round initiative to educate and remind our community how important it is to support our local businesses.
Independent community-serving businesses donate twice as much money, resources, and services to charities than chains do. They also consume less land, carry more locally-made products, and employ local people.

When Proposition 125 the Wine Sales in Grocery and Convenience Stores Initiative, passed in 2022, local liquor stores were hit the hardest. When you take that extra time to walk into a liquor store and purchase your wine there, you are literally putting your money in the hands of the owner and back into our community. From there, the cycle of money continues in our county and our community thrives.
Independent liquor stores are big supporters of the craft beer industry and local distilleries. Sometimes they are the first and only to carry these specialty products. In addition, big chain stores limit selections, crowding out local producers in favor of national corporate brands.

Disclaimer: We all have to go to bigger stores like Walmart and Target for certain items, so keep in mind that they employ locals and they pay local taxes unlike shopping online.
